Accommodation options in Extremadura are varied, ranging from luxury hotels and paradores, to family-run guesthouses and casas rurales, self-catering apartments, hostels and camping sites.

Hospederías are a series of four-star hotels located in historical buildings in rural areas that will suit travellers exploring Extremadura by car particularly well. In this article, I share general information about hospederías in Extremadura and an overview of the ones I have stayed at myself.

Hospederías in Extremadura

Hospederías de Extremadura is a regional government-sponsored hotel chain of historic buildings turned into four-star hotels. Mostly located in small towns, villages and hamlets, hospederías are a quality and reasonably-priced option both for accommodation and food, with on-site restaurants, swimming pool, and English-speaking reception staff.

How many hospederías are there and where?

There are eight hospederías in Extremadura – seven in Cáceres province, and one in Badajoz province.

The seven hospederías in Cáceres province are located in the following areas: Tajo-Salor-Almonte (2), Sierra de Gata (1), Las Hurdes (1), Valle del Ambroz (1), Valle del Jerte (1), and Monfragüe and surroundings (1).

The hospedería in Badajoz province is located in Campiña Sur.

Advantages of staying at hospederías

Buildings with character. You’ll be staying at historical places with an interesting background story and packed with charm.

On-site restaurants. You’ll have a no-brainer option for lunch or dinner offering affordable set and à la carte menus (including some traditional regional recipes with a twist), and a certain degree of flexibility in terms of vegetarian and gluten-free options.

Rural locations. You’ll be able to explore little places outside the main tourist trail and enjoy a much more local, authentic travel experience.
